Can diet improve acne?

Acne is a skin condition that causes multiple or frequent development of bumps called pimples. A pimple develops when tiny holes on your skin called pores or hair follicles plug become blocked with oil, dirt or dead skin cells. Acne is a very common skin condition.
Although acne does not pose a serious risk to your health, it can cause emotional distress and low self-esteem and self-confidence which may lead to anxiety disorders and depression.
What causes acne? Acne may result from any of the following factors:
- Hormonal changes due to pregnancy or puberty.
- Persons with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
- Poor sleep
- Stress
- Cleansers, creams, moisturizers and other beauty products with high oil content.
- Certain medications including lithium, certain hormonal birth control drugs, anticonvulsants and steroids..
Certain foods which may reduce acne including:
- Low sugar diet
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids may help reduce acne breakouts.
- Vegan and vegetarian diet is also thought to reduce acne
- Probiotics found in yogurt and other fermented foods/supplements could help improve on acne
- Reducing milk consumption is also thought to reduce acne development.
